Blue Sky Black Death may want to do without guest vocalists for a little while. West Coast producers Kingston and Young God teamed up with a different low-key singer on each of their last couple of albums, but the real allure was still in the duo's layered, expansive instrumentals. Then there was the drama a few years back over Jean Grae team-up The Evil Jeanius; the New York MC went on Craigslist and MySpace to protest the "unauthorized" use of her rhymes (she said it wasn't the beat-makers' fault). BSBD have collaborated with plenty of other indie rappers, most recently including tourmates CunninLynguists, but their latest album suggests they can acquit themselves just fine on their own.

As Clams Casino's first beat tape earlier this year demonstrated, some of the best rap instrumentals these days can work equally well as moody electronic music, drifting naturally between the worlds of hip-hop or R&B and ambient, post-dubstep, or chillwave. Noir has a similar way of wringing strangely affecting emotional grandeur from the rudiments of sound, though BSBD's style relies less on glitch or drone and more on starry-eyed orchestral vastness. Using an impressively naunced deployment of strings, piano, and guitar as well as drum loops and hazy synths, the album has a patient, steady beauty, ranging from glowing panoramas evoking M83 to the classical-informed abstraction of Anticon acts like Dosh and Son Lux.

The duo's acronym is apparently skydiver slang, popularized in the 1994 thriller Drop Zone. It implies, "Sure, appreciate the majesty of nature all you want, but if something goes wrong you'll leave a grisly corpse." If Noir can't quite fully embody that essential paradox-- it's not particularly noir-ish, either-- it still succeeds in communicating incomprehensible hugeness through sonically detailed tracks with an almost narrative-like structure. There are several standouts, but a good place to start is "Sleeping Children Are Still Flying", which uses a humid Southern-rock guitar solo and languidly triumphant drum programming to support a string section, a children's choir, and a snippet of dialogue from classic 1986 coming-of-age dramaStand By Me: River Phoenix is talking about dreams, and missed chances. While the kids and the symphonic elements would have no trouble fitting in on an indie pop beach fantasy by Air France, those blues-drenched licks could just as easily soundtrack one of the Weeknd's dangerous liaisons.

Noir isn't completely instrumental, then, and in fact uses sung samples as well as the spoken-word variety. But the strongest voice here is BSBD's own-- wide-screen and Technicolor, to mix sensory metaphors. An aching soul vocal from Solomon Burke's "Don't Give Up on Me"is secondary to a sighing, silvery arrangement and pulsing bass on brief interlude "Falling Short"; Dusty Springfield's version of "The Windmills of Your Mind" complements the hypnotic repetitions and emotional anguish of "Farewell to the Former World", which despite its melancholy theme has a snare-heavy rhythm track fit for blasting through car windows on hot days. Or for rapping over: Three years after BSBD's last proper instrumental album, Babygrande release Late Night Cinema, Noir again proves the duo don't need singers or rappers to make their music felt. But that doesn't mean an aspiring MC or two might not be able to make use of their services anyway.

DUN DUN DUUUUN, it's alive!

I've been missing this blog alot, and since I seem to still have a steady stream of visitors, why not get started again?
I will (hopefully) start posting alot again, but we will see what happends. But for now, enjoy this incredible band that just recently released their new album Gangs.

I love ASIWYFA, and I absolutely love the new album, been listening to it non-stop since I downloaded it.
They play post-rock, but it's not your generic EITS post-rock, they have their own style, and you can really tell how skilled they are with their instruments. Not much singing is going on, but when it does, it's mostly without any words (except on some collaborations they have done), and it is so fucking amazing that it almost brings me to tears.
The S/T is so good, it's insane.

EDIT: Btw, don't send me any emails about posting your band, I won't look at them anymore, sorry. It's just that I don't have enough time to do all that, and at the same time do things that I enjoy.

This is fucking amazing. I can't find one single bad song on this album. And actually, Jason from Men as trees emailed me and asked me to upload this, so download this baby like crazy!

From Moment Of Collapse's website (their distro seems to be down at the moment):

"Le Pre Ou Je Suis Mort are at first and offer with “l'avenir nous appartiendra” a new song which proofs that their debut EP wasn`t a nine day wonder. The song convinces on full scale. Different intense exchange of blows lead after a really ear catching intro into an absolute brilliant endpart, where you will find instruments that are not that often paired with music like this, absolute thrilling. With every break out the voice gets more despaired and the melodies fill more room. A great choice of different guitar effects, confer this long and epic piece of music the right draft.

Next are Dolcim who contribute with “Claire, advertising, 31” a straight forward driving song. This 3-piece band makes a lot of noise and trusts at this point once again on the methods they used on both of their full-lengths. Drum lines full of pressure, guitar melodies which are coupled with digital delays and diverse other effects, deep beating bass lines combined with a soaking voice that seems never to loose intensity. A really short calm kept middle part is the exception, surrounded by distorted forward rockin parts.

Men As Trees open the b-side with their unique song entitled “discovery”, which starts with a couple of calm played tones before a dark screaming voice guided by a heavy played guitars take care for the addition of enough volume. Variations of the used melodies combined with screamed and sung vocals cater for unexpected skills. The songwriting is very various, you´ll find a lot of influences without loosing grip. A highlight is the acoustic guitar before the song leads into the last part in which you'll find all musical fixings this band uses.

The endpoint of this release is set by Dying In Motion, who contribute with "in meiner welt", "fürchtet unsere Sanftmut" und "komet" 3 songs which are a perfect sequel of their recently released album. The songs are caught somewhere between early french influences combined with postrock/hardcore sounds. What makes this band special is that they hold this combination under the cloak of simplicity what makes their music really interesting. All contributed songs of this release were till this point unreleased. We pressed 525 copies on black vinyl. A Lyricsheed which is printed on recycled paper is included as well. The amazing artwork was done by Sabrina Schmill"

I just stumbled upon this band while browsing the "smaltown supersound" website(great norwegian with mostly electronic music).

It seems like they're based in Sweden with three female members and one male member. The male member is the norwegian I posted a while ago, Kim Hiorthøy(on guitars).

They have only released one album, but it's like an eargasm to me.

If you liked his solo stuff, I guarantee you that you'll like this. Really similar sound but with guitars and female vocals. I got hooked in an instant. This is the best band I've heard in a veeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeery long time.

I highly recommend this.

'A fucking mess' was my first thought when I first heard Gorguts a few years ago. the irony is that's what I came to love about em. In the beginning I didn't like it at all. I really didn't get it. It just seemed totally twisted and insane. But somehow, and I really don't know why; I kept on listening to these guys from time to time. The chaos they've created seemed somehow soothing and calming, and I eventually came to love them.

Gorguts plays maybe the most chaotic, insane, disturbed, technical, fast and aggressive metal that I know of. Every riff they do is amazing, the drums are simply just perfect and Luc Lemay's vocals just puts a cherry on top of the 'what the fuck is happening in my head'.

If you are into disharmonic and technical stuff and do not get frightened by the term 'death metal' I would suggest you try letting these guys destroy your mind for a while. You will maybe come to like it. I suggest you start off by listening to the album 'From Wisdom To Hate', since the opening track 'Inverted' shows you what they are all about about from the very first second. Gorguts actually started in the early 90's as a straight out death metal band (which imo is cool too! but,) I'm not gonna talk about that period, since I find they're insane-tech-metal stuff much more interesting.

It would be a shame to compare Gorguts with any other band. They are simply just unique, and that is what you will come to hate or love about them.

Come Across Trachimbrod is a band that I came across (hehe) during Emotional Day, which was fucking awesome by the way.

They play harmonic post-rock that build up to a climax with screaming and shredding guitars. I bought their CD's right after they stopped playing, and now I'm broke. But it was totally worth it.

The last song on "Eating People Is Easy" is a remix by Precious Moments and it's one of the best songs I've ever heard, pick this one up just for that song.

The artwork on "Eating People Is Easy" is made by The Black Heart Rebellion, and it's very classy.

I just discovered this band through a friend of mine (thanks Ricky! Go check out he's blog here), and I'm really surprised that I never heard of these guys before.

The Sons Of Saturn plays a mix of technical screamo, hardcore and punk. The best description I can give of this band, is as if you imagine Mihai Edrich and Raein having a baby. A fast, talented, melodic, epic, awesome little baby. Just the kind of son you always wanted. The kind of kid that grows up to not only be the best in class, but also get all the girls, do good at sports and- ..Okay, I got a bit carried away there. You get the point!

I can't believe it's finally done. It has been about 1,5 years since Pesanteur did their first show, and I've seen them.. alot since then.
I, and some of the Swedish scene, have this band to thank for putting up shows, booking awesome bands and having great fun at plenty of wonderful shows.

The demo starts with an improvised post-rock intro, and then features the bands best 4 songs they ever made during their time as a band. 4 really, really good songs. Obetitlad is a killer, nuff' said.

They will be doing their last show ever with the amazing Touché Amore, Lighthouse and Out Of Hope the 16th of November at Kafé 44 in Stockholm. Be there. Seriously.

This is Daughters. If you are into stuff like Tower of Rome, Shining (Norway), Destroyer Destroyer, The Number Twelve Looks Like You, some of the earlier The Locust, or just wanna try something awesome and different; you should really check this out!

Their first record (Canada Songs) and the 7" EP is really fucking aggressive, trashy and crazed while the "Hell Songs" record is (still fucking crazy!, but) more groovy, schizo and noisy.

Their newest record 'Daughters' just came out in march, and I am listening to it for the first time as I'm writing. I am just about halfway through the record, and goddam - these guys just keeps on amazing me. More noisy and insane - and still, for some weird reason; more listenable - than ever.

Please, do yourself a really big favor and give these guys a chance.

The Fall Of Troy is a post-hardcore/mathish band. This is one of my favorite bands ever. I will only post their 2 best albums, the other ones can be skipped in my opinion.
The singer has a rather special voice that some people may not digg, but I find it better and better for each time I hear it. The guitars are simply incredible. You may remember the song "F.C.P.R.E.M.I.X" from Guitar Hero 3.

They play epic screamo with lots of violins. Need I say more? This is simply awe-to-the-some.

Well, this i something else. And by that i mean really something else. What we have here, is a ambient/trip hop project with some of the most dark and creepy soundscapes i have ever experienced. Long and floaty intros that will get you goosebombs, chilling pads, samples of mindfucking conversations and dirty beats played by a live-drummer, is what you can expect of Teargas & Plateglass. I can most definitely recommend giving them a shot!

Sounds like: Tycho with a twist of insanity; whatever darkness would sound like; a bad bad bad trip; a soundtrack to a nightmare...... you get the point.

Monaurals is a screamo band from Söderhamn, Sweden.
I will see them twice in a couple of weeks, first with Moloken, This Gift Is A Curse and Via Fondo in Uppsala on September 17, and the day after in Insjön once again with Via Fondo, and a very promising post-rock/screamo band called Atrophy of the Heart.
Anyone who has the possibility should go to atleast some of these shows, all the bands are really great. I will hopefully upload This Gift Is A Curse's newly released CDEP in the end of next week, after their show with Downfall of Gaia and If Footmen Tire You..., but until then, have a nice listen to Monaurals.

This mathcore band started up in loganville (ga) in 2003 and ended in 2007. They're a really technical and chaotic, one of the more chaotic i've heard. For me, this is a totally awesome band. Really worth a listen! Highly recommended!

In the song "Just Can't Function No More" on the album "loss", they have a part where they play a short, short bit of "love will tear us apart". It's hilarious!

This guy is a electronic musician, illustrator, graphic designer, filmmaker and writer. He's music is really comfortable to listen to. If I were to set a genre on his work, I would say IDM(short for "intelligent dance music"). The "melke"-album has been one of my favorites for the last two or three years, it's an incredible album. I hope you like it as much as I do.

No Omega is a hardcore band from Stockholm, some influences stated on myspace are bands like The Carrier, Dead Swans and The Eight Arms. They have shared stage with great bands like Ruiner and Carpathian.

I can't really remember the first time I saw these guys, but I know one thing, this is some rad stuff. They are going out on a euro-tour soon with Poison My Blood, and later a little tour around Sweden and Denmark with The Cassidy Scenario. According to their myspace, they still need some help with some dates, so if you book shows and live somewhere where they need help, help them out!

GSLG keeps their old style, and it sounds really really good. Just as it did on the demo and the split with Me And Goliath. I've been waiting to hear new stuff from them, and to hear that they are still as good as they were before makes me glad.
The same kind of goes with the squids, they keep on doing what they do best, playing music their way. Some new songs, like Kafka Fanshirt, is A+ material.

Great band from Berlin that I've seen two days in a row now. One of the best screamo-bands there is, basically. How they play with the beat and the tempo is just amazing to hear and enjoy. And they are just incredible live, the tunes makes you want to dance like crazy. Plus that they are all very friendly and nice people.
